King Mzilikazi seminar starts at Mhlahlandlela

THE much-anticipated King Mzilikazi commemorations have begun at the monarchy’s grave site in the caves of Entumbane, Matobo Hills, also known as eMhlahlandlela, marking a significant chapter in the preservation of Ndebele cultural heritage.

Today’s programmme started late, at 11 pm due to travelling logistics.

The main event will culminate on Saturday at the revered Mhlahlandlela.

For the first time since the commemorations were established in 2000, the first day of the programme includes an educational component aimed at promoting heritage-based learning and cultural awareness among students – from primary school to university level.

Schools that are part of the seminar are from Matabeleland South and Bulawayo. Some of them are Gloag High, Lukadzi primary, Mpopoma high, Sizane high, Matopo high, amongst others.

The seminar will feature traditional activities such as songs and dances, while instilling values of Ubuntu, responsibility and cultural pride.

Young girls will be encouraged to join Amatshitshi and boys to join Amabutho, where they will receive guidance on becoming responsible members of their communities.

Some of the key speakers at the gathering is South African author Nthebe Molope who wrote the book “King Mzilikazi Ka Matshobane: The Brave Warrior Who Defied Shaka, Defended the Land and Confronted Colonial Forces.”

Other speakers are Apostle N Khumalo who will touch on the history of King Mzilikazi, Ms P Moyo who will touch on different Ndebele rites of passages as well as Chief Masuku.

Matabeleland South Provincial Education Director Mrs Beatrice Manjere (uMaKhumalo) is also expected to give an address.

Entertainment will be provided by Gohole primary, Sunyetsen Dance group, Bulawayo Methodist centre, Sigiya Ngemikhuba and Amagagasi Amahle.

Historian, Arnold Nkala, who is the moderator, said the seminar is focusing on educating learners about the life and legacy of King Mzilikazi, the founder of the Ndebele nation.

He said the participants will also explore Ndebele traditions, cultural values and indigenous languages through interactive sessions.
