THERE was an air of excitement as veteran motor racing driver Gary Kirk charged to victory in the Ezytrack Grand Prix at Donnybrook Park Raceway in Harare on Sunday.

It was just another good day in the office for Kirk as he “notched up a double” by winning the main event of the day – the Ezytrack Grand Prix — and the Sports B (Super 7’s) Class. Sunday’s event was the opening round of the 2026 main circuit racing National Championship series.

And Kirk once again exhibited his supremacy, earning his first victory of the season by charging to victory in the Ezytrack Grand Prix, which was a Handicap race. With a bold, brilliant move in the last lap, Kirk prevailed in a duel with fellow top drivers Maurizio Savo and Jim Perry who settled for second and third place respectively.

The trio traded blows over the closing laps. The Ezytrack Grand Prix attracted a good field of 11 cars with the likes of Gary Bluett, Quinton Holder, Denzil Bhana, Ronald Parsell, Shaun Kerwin, Christian Morris, Carl Olsen and Neil Bruce trying to outmonuevre each other in this exciting race. The irresistible Kirk delivered another victory in the Sports B (Super 7’s) Class, winning it ahead of Savo and Parsell. Crowd favourite, Kirk, was just a class apart in this race.

Another top local motor racing driver, Mano Zevgolis, was also all smiles after emerging victorious in the Saloon C (1600cc) Class.

Driving a Honda CRX, which belongs to his daughter, Catherine, who is currently studying outside the country, Zevgolis wasted no time asserting his command of this race, making a number of some sweeping moves to take the first step on the podium ahead of Steve Murton and Vernon Lapham.

Darling of the crowd, Zevgolis kept it pretty simple and tried to keep a nice gap between himself and the rest of the field.

It was pretty straight up.

In fact, it was a convincing and comprehensive victory for Zevgolis and he is going to take some stopping in this class this season. Zevgolis, a dominant figure in the 3-Hour Endurance Race, also raced with the same car in the Saloon B (2000cc) Class. But he was forced to settle for second place behind Denzil Bhana. Lapham rounded out the podium finishers by placing third. It was pretty amazing to see Zevgolis being on the podium twice during a day of some exciting motor racing on the main circuit at Donnybrook Park Raceway — the iconic venue of local motorsport events.

There was also joy for another veteran driver Perry who took the first step on the podium in the Saloon A (Unlimited) Class. Perry raced to victory ahead of Bluett and Des Morris who settled for second and third place. After watching some close duels during Sunday’s race meeting, one of its organisers, Lisa Upton, said this season promises to be an exciting one. “It was a fantastic day with higher entry in a while. There were 27 entries, which is good for the sport,” Upton said after the opening day of the 2026 main circuit racing National Championship series.
