LONDON. — Former Borussia Dortmund manager Juergen Klopp is expected at Anfield today as the German edges closer to becoming Brendan Rodgers’ successor at Liverpool, while Carlo Ancelotti has ruled himself out of contention.
The German is expected to travel to Merseyside today to continue talks with the club over replacing Rodgers, who was sacked on Sunday.
Klopp is reportedly in advanced talks with Fenway Sports Group President Mike Gordon and Liverpool Chief Executive Ian Ayre and is planning to fly to England to complete negotiations ahead of his highly anticipated move.
Klopp is expected to sign a three-year deal worth in excess of the £3.6m he earned at former club Borussia Dortmund, and his imminent arrival has been hailed a coup for Liverpool with Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer claiming: “He is one of the best coaches I know in the whole world, and he was really a milestone for Borussia Dortmund.
“He took over the club and made them into a world-class team. If Liverpool has the chance to sign Jurgen Klopp then they should do it.
“Liverpool is also one of the biggest clubs in the world, so Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp is definitely a good combination.”
Former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager Ancelotti, who was also linked with the job, has told reporters he would return to management, but only next season. I enjoy my time now but, of course, I want to come back to manage – to work – because it is my passion,” the 56-year-old Italian said at a press event in London. — Reuters.
