Know Your Warriors…Benyu seeks fresh start

Sports Reporter

IT was once thought that Kundai Benyu’s football career had slipped into the shadows.

Eight years ago, he was a rising star in the Scottish Premiership, playing for Celtic, with the world seemingly at his feet.

But a series of loans and stints across various countries from Sweden to Iceland to lower league England had left him looking for stability. Now, at 27, Benyu finds himself in an unfamiliar yet intriguing position: hoping to resurrect his career in Zimbabwe’s Premier League with CAPS United.

For the Green Machine, his arrival is a surprise but a hopeful one. The club, still searching for their first league title in nearly a decade, sees Benyu as a player who could breathe new life into their midfield. It’s not just his international experience that excites them; it’s the raw talent he’s still believed to possess despite years of transition.

Benyu’s journey to this point has been a rollercoaster.

His career began in the youth ranks of Ipswich Town in England, where he showed promise from a young age. A successful loan at Aldershot Town caught the attention of his national team, and soon after, he was called up to represent Zimbabwe in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. But it was his big move in 2017 to Celtic that many expected to be the moment his career soared.

The four-year deal seemed like a dream come true for the London-born midfielder, but things didn’t go as planned.

Sent on loan to various clubs — including Oldham, Helsingborgs in Sweden, and later Wealdstone in England — Benyu struggled to break into Celtic’s star-studded line-up.

The dream of playing for one of Scotland’s top teams slowly faded, and he eventually found himself moving to Iceland to play for Vestri. But with each step, his career seemed to veer further from the top leagues.

It was in Iceland where Benyu’s career took another unexpected turn. After leaving IBV in 2023, he became a free agent and the rumours began. First, there were whispers of a move to South Africa’s prestigious Premier League, with clubs like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates reportedly interested in his services. But those talks never materialized, leaving Benyu to contemplate his next move.

Then came the opportunity with CAPS United. While his return to African football is an unfamiliar chapter, the prospect of playing for a club with rich history and passionate supporters feels like the perfect stage for a career revival.

The Green Machine have also strengthened their midfield with the addition of Tanaka Shandirwa, another former player of Dynamos, making their squad even more formidable. But the question remains: can Benyu recapture the spark that once had him standing on the brink of stardom in Europe?

CAPS United officials are hopeful, even though they acknowledge that Benyu’s adjustment to African football may take some time. But they see a player with great potential — a player who, despite the setbacks, still has a lot to offer. Benyu’s talent and vision on the ball could be exactly what the Green Machine needs to propel them to the league title they’ve longed for.

For Benyu, this move is more than just another club change. It’s a chance to reignite a career that once seemed destined for greatness. Whether he succeeds in Zimbabwe or not, this chapter marks the beginning of what could be a remarkable resurgence in a career that has seen its fair share of ups and downs.

Now, all eyes are on Benyu to see if he can rise once more. The next phase of his career is here — and for the first time in years, there’s a genuine sense of belief that he might just be able to reclaim his place in the spotlight.
