LACK of sponsorship could derail Kudakwashe Chiwandire’s preparations for a World Boxing Council title fight set for December 15.
The talented boxer will fight Urvashi Singh of India in Victoria, Australia for the WBC International Super bantamweight belt.
This is Chiwandire’s second shot at a WBC title this year after she lost via a unanimous decision against Yamileth Mercado in a gold belt match in Mexico in March.
Before then, the Highfield bred pugilist held the WBC Interim Super bantamweight title which she won at the expense of highly rated Catherine Phiri of Zambia.
Chiwandire is now targeting the WBC International belt but her preparations for the fight could be disturbed by lack of resources. It has emerged that some of the sponsors that assisted her before have walked away.
Chiwandire’s manager Clyde Musonda is once again extending the begging bowl to the corporate world and “other well wishers.”
“We doing our best but all is not okay as we are preparing this fight on zero sponsorship, that’s our set back,” mourned Musonda.
Chiwandire is currently training at a Harare gym but the boxer has failed to go into camp because of scarce resources.
“We really wanted to put the boxer on isolation but nothing has came up so far.
“The boxer also needs to go for medicals check up etc.
“But we are trying with the few resources, we are getting our visas this week.”
The 28-year-old Chiwandire has emerged as one the best boxers in recent years.
She shot to prominence when she defeated Zambian star boxer Phiri to claim the WBC Interim Super bantamweight title in February 2022.
She successfully defended the title against Zulina Munoz of Mexico in Harare in October before going for the WBC gold belt against Mercado in March this year.
