Kutama, Dominican Convent dominate chess tourney

KUTAMA College and Dominican Convent were crowned the 2023 Lomagundi College Invitational Chess tournament champions on Saturday.

The Kutama team lead by Tawana Mhako managed four points out of five to win the boys crown and they were ahead of ZRP High who came second and St George’s A team who came third.

Mhako was the best player on board one with a total of four points as Roland Chitakunye, also of Kutama was the best player on board two with a total of five points.

Justin Nyakabau of ZRP High was the best player on board three with a total of five points.

Dominican Convent Harare Team A won the women’s open section with Rumbidzai Mawire dominating.

Mawire, who was recently in Egypt for the Africa Challenge tournament, finished on five points steering her team ahead of Dominican Convent Harare Team B while ZRP was third.

Maita Mangwende, also of Dominican Coventry Harare, was the best player on board two with five points as Mutsa Chikwaike also from Dominican Convent Harare, was the best player on board three with five points.

Dominican Convent Harare continued with their dominance as Audrey Musiringi was the best player on board four with five points.

The junior boys section which had 22 teams was won by St Georges Team A who were ahead of St Johns’ Team A and Hellenic Academy. In the Junior Girls Section there were 15 teams and Dominican Convent Team A prevailed ahead of Arundel Team A and ZRP to complete the podium.

The tournament organiser and district arbiter, Maurice Mutowembwa said he was happy with the tournament and looks forward to a bigger and better event next year.

“We are very grateful to all those who has helped to see the tournament successful. I am thankful to all those, who have come on board to support us,” said Mutowembwa.

The Chief Arbiter was Jarmil Ndoro, who was supported by Moses Mutipforo, Victor Chimbamu and Lewis Kahoba.
