The City of Kwekwe has started shooting stray and roaming dogs following an increase in rabies cases.
In an interview, Kwekwe mayor, Councillor Albert Zinhanga, said some of the dogs are on the roads and are not claimed.
“We have engaged the SPCA, which has rounded up the dogs.
“But you will see that the number of dogs will continue to increase on the streets.
“So what we normally do is we write a notice, then we carry out the shooting according to the scheduled times,” he said.
Cllr Zinhanga said they carried out a similar exercise last year.
“Then we give a period of time and see how the people are responding.
“If we see that there is another outbreak of cases, like in this case, where there has been an increase in rabies cases recorded by Kwekwe General Hospital and the Veterinary.
“That is the reason why we have given council the go-ahead to carry out this exercise,” he said.
