Kwekwe City deputy mayor Councillor Shadreck Tobaiwa died from prostrate canceron Wednesday night at the age of 76.
Clr Tobaiwa, who served as Kwekwe mayor between 2008 and 2013, died at his Amaveni home, his daughter, Judith Tobaiwa, confirmed yesterday.
“We are still in shock as a family. We have lost a father, one whom we could turn to in times of need, a pillar of strength. We are yet to come to terms with his death which came when we thought we were still with him,” she said. Ms Tobaiwa said her father had been battling prostate cancer for some time, and dismissed rumours that he died of Covid-19.
Kwekwe mayor Angeline Kasipo described Clr Tobaiwa as a humble person who was determined to develop his city.
“It is with deep sadness that I leant of the death my deputy, Clr Shadreck Tobaiwa, last night after a short illness. The loss has deeply shaken the entire community of Kwekwe, particularly Kwekwe City Council.
“We never saw it coming and indeed we are still in a state of shock,” she said.
Mayor Kasipo said council will miss the experienced councillor’s contributions towards the development of the city.
“He was humble and hardworking man, one who wouldn’t mince his words when we are on council business, standing his ground,” said mayor Kasipo.
Clr Tobaiwa was elected into council in 2008 before being elected mayor and his term ended in 2013. He was re-elected as councillor of Ward 6, in Amaveni in 2018 and lost his bid to become mayor but landed the deputy mayor’s position.
In council, he was chairperson of the human resources and general purposes committee.
Clr Tobaiwa is survived by wife Margarete, five children and eight grandchildren.
He is expected to be buried at Fichlea Cemetery in Kwekwe on Saturday.
