Kwekwe hosts Midlands Province Defence Forces Day celebrations

SCORES of people are gathering at Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe for this year’s Defence Forces Day celebrations, with thousands expected to attend as the event progresses.

The celebrations mark the second time that the Midlands Province has hosted the event outside Gweru, following last year’s commemorations at Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane.

The Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube, is expected to inspect the guard of honour before delivering President Mnangagwa’s speech on his behalf.

The hosting of national commemorations in different parts of the country is part of the Second Republic’s decentralisation drive, aimed at promoting inclusivity and equitable regional development.

Last year, Zvishavane hosted the Midlands Defence Forces Day celebrations at Mandava Stadium.

The event brings together Government officials, traditional leaders, service chiefs, war veterans and members of the public to honour the country’s Defence Forces and recognise their contribution to maintaining peace and security and supporting national development.
