A KWEKWE man has been slapped with a 10-month jail term after a horrific road crash that killed four people.
Percy Mkwaturi (46) was convicted of culpable homicide after a late-August smash on the Kwekwe-Gokwe road that prosecutors say was written in the language of pure negligence.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the tragedy occurred on 30 August 2025 at around 6:57PM. Mkwaturi, driving a Subaru and dragging a trailer overloaded with 14 passengers, swerved to avoid a stationary vehicle and veered straight into an oncoming Toyota Probox.
The impact at the 65km peg was devastating, killing four people on the spot in a mangled mess of metal, screams and shattered lives.
In the NPAZ’s chilling breakdown, Mkwaturi drove like a man courting disaster.
He was faulted for “failure to keep a proper look-out”, “failure to stop or act reasonably when the accident seemed imminent”, and “failure to keep the motor vehicle under proper control.”
To make matters worse, prosecutors added that he was travelling “at an excessive speed under the circumstances.”
The NPA reiterated its warning to all motorists, reminding the nation that the road is no playground.
“Motorists are reminded that negligent driving endangers lives. Drivers must exercise caution,” said the prosecuting authority.
The court agreed, handing Mkwaturi a custodial sentence.
