Kwekwe mayor speaks out

Kwekwe Mayor Councillor Angeline Kasipo has said the local authority will work with a registered residents’ association that is seconded to council by the people of the city, following squabbles within Kwekwe Residents Association.

The association has split into two, with one faction led by Mr Alex Homela and another under Mr Calton Chivhoko.

Mr Homela has been accused of running a one-man residents’ association for more than a decade without calling for elections.

Disgruntled residents, led by Mr Chivhoko, are trying to come up with a splinter association to counter Mr Homela.

Mr Homela has been evasive on elections and when The Herald called him last week seeking clarification on allegations that he was running a one-man association, he said he will introduce other members of his executive.

“We have a leadership, we have a chairman, we have a spokesperson for the residents and I will give you their contacts so that you can speak to them, but I will have to speak to them first before I give you their contacts,” said Mr Homela.

Clr Kasipo said she was still to check if there was a properly registered residents association in Kwekwe.

“The challenge is we don’t interfere in residents’ association affairs, but we are willing to work with any registered association that truly represents the will of Kwekwe residents,” she said.
