KWEKWE City Council has donated vast tracts of land to Midlands State University (MSU) for construction of a new campus, which will house the faculties of Law, Natural Resources Management and Agriculture.
MSU has campuses in Zvishavane, Harare, Botswana and is incubating a university in Swaziland. The university plans to enrol more than 60 000 students in the next five years, up from the current 22 000.
Kwekwe mayor Councillor Matenda Madzoke said they were delighted with the prospects of having MSU in the town. He said council had resolved to give MSU over 182 hectares of land for the setting up of the Kwekwe campus. “We are happy with this development that is going to change the face of this mining town,” said Cllr Madzoke.
“To show we are ready and support the establishment of a campus here, we gave MSU 82ha of land and that is a whole farm. The coming in of the university faculty in our town would greatly increase revenue flows and the development of the city.”
Cllr Madzoke said the socio-economic activity of the mining town would change for the better.
