Kwekwe City Council is working on upgrading its waterworks to meet increasing demand, mayor Councillor Angeline Kasipo has said. Apart from supplying water for domestic and commercial use in the city, Kwekwe City Council has an obligation to supply water to the neighbouring Redcliff Municipality.
In an interview yesterday, Clr Kasipo said Kwekwe City was now struggling to satisfy its needs and those of Redcliff due to an increase in population over the years.
She said the only way to end the water woes was to upgrade the Kwekwe City water works to improve on the plumbing capacity.
“As you are aware, Kwekwe City Council is the one which supplies treated water to Redcliff,” said Clr Kasipo.
“However, over the years, these two cities have expanded in terms of both industries and population.
“We are thus finding it very difficult as Kwekwe City to maintain constant supplies to Redcliff. At times they go for weeks without water.
“As a long-term measure, we had proposed an increased 2019 budget so that we can upgrade our water works to meet the demand.”
Redcliff Municipality owes Kwekwe City Council about $3 million for the water supplies.
Kwekwe City council has at times resorted to cutting water supplies to Redcliff for weeks in a bid to force them to pay up.
