KWEKWE United President Phil Makekera has handed over a controlling stake in the club to the people of Kwekwe, marking a major shift in ownership and vision.

Speaking at a Press conference in Harare, Makekera announced he would be giving away most of his shares, free of charge, to the local community and business stakeholders.

“It has been public knowledge that Kwekwe United has been owned by myself,” he said.

“But today, I am announcing that I have decided to relinquish my shares within the club, freely, to the Kwekwe community and the business community.”

The shares will be split between two groups: local residents and the business sector.

Representing the community are Hon Jona Nyevera (Silobela Constituency) and Hon. Vongaishe Mupereri (Mbizo Constituency), ensuring supporters now have a direct stake in the club’s future. Leading the business bloc is Dr Solomon Matsa, opening the door for local and international investors to get involved.

While Makekera will retain a portion of his stake, he made it clear that the majority now belongs to the people.

“This is no longer a one-man project. It is now a community-driven initiative.”

For years, Makekera has personally bankrolled Kwekwe United, guiding the club through both high points and setbacks. But he acknowledged that lasting success requires broader support.

“The people of Kwekwe have always rallied behind this team,” he said.

“Now, they will have a say in its direction. This gives them a sense of belonging, because it is their club.”

The club’s leadership structure remains unchanged for now. Makekera stays on as president, supported by vice presidents Dr Solomon Matsa (Commercial), Hon Jona Nyevera (Community), and Comrade Lamek Tarupira (Marketing) along with CEO Bridget Mudhosi.

With shares now available to the public, the club is inviting new voices to shape its path forward.

“Anyone who loves football, whether in Kwekwe, the Midlands, or beyond, can now be part of this journey,” said Mudhosi.

As the transition unfolds, Kwekwe United expects interest from both local supporters and diaspora investors looking to help build the club’s future.

“This is not just about football,” Makekera added.

“It’s about unity, pride, and giving back to the people who have stood by us. Together, we can take Kwekwe United to new heights.”
