match as a walkover after La Liga did not turn up at Thomlison yesterday for the game.
But La Liga said they would not recognise the result since they had informed the board that they were not fulfilling the match.
Yesterday, the home team Rhinos turned up at the stadium as did the referees and, after the mandatory 30 minutes, the match official abandoned the match. Northern Region secretary-general Sweeny Mushonga said the match has been awarded to the army side on a 3-0 scoreline.
“Black Rhinos have been awarded the match as a walkover. They went to the stadium and they referees also turned up but La Liga did not come and after the mandatory 30 minutes the referee blew to end the match.
“We understand there is lot of competition in the league and there is only one team that has to win the league at the end of the day. But clubs should adhere to rules of the league otherwise we will always have problems,” said Mushonga.
However, the La Liga camp was singing a different tune last night and team manager Bothwell Mahlengwe said they are in dark on the developments.
“We are not aware of that. We told the region that we are not going to play the game until they furnish us with documents we asked for when we wrote to them.
“So how could they have proceeded to stage a match. We haven’t received any formal communication from the league. We will wait for their formal communication on the awarding of the game to Rhinos and we will take it up from there,” said Mahlengwe.
The circus is obviously far from over with La Liga likely to appeal against the latest decision.
The match between the two teams was abandoned on October 1 when referee Phineas Takayedza stopped the match citing lack of security after a La Liga player was allegedly attacked by a Rhinos fan as he was preparing to take a corner. 10-man Black Rhinos were leading 1-0 with the 13 minutes remaining. The Northern Region board, currently being led by vice-chairman Saidi Sangula following the suspension of chairman
Solomon Mugavazi from all football related activities due to a pending Asiagate probe on him, passed a judgment that the two teams should play the remaining minutes.
