THE Lady Chevrons booked a place in the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier after crushing neighbours Botswana by 115 runs at Entebbe Cricket Oval in Uganda yesterday.
It was a second successive victory for the Lady Chevrons who beat Kenya in the opening match on Saturday, guaranteeing them a place among the top two in the group and a ticket to the semi-final.
They will now meet Tanzania tomorrow to decide the winner of the group.
Zimbabwe won the toss, elected to bat and posted an imposing 162/5 off their allotted 20 overs before bowling Botswana out for 47 in 17.4 overs. All-rounder Kelis Ndhlovu was voted player of the match for her 31 runs in 17 balls with the bat and two wickets for 17 in four overs of left arm spin.
Opener Modester Mupachikwa was the topscorer for the Lady Chevrons with an unbeaten 47 off 44 balls while fellow opener and captain, Mary-Anne Musonda was third highest scorer with 28 off 18 balls. Musonda hit the most boundaries of the match (6) followed by Mupachikwa (5) while the Botswana bowlers added 17 extras to the Lady Chevrons total.
Botswana struggled with the required run rate from the start of their response and had crawled to 36/1 after 10 overs, meaning they needed to score 127 in the remaining 10 overs with nine wickets in hand.
They then lost the nine wickets for just 11 runs in 7.4 overs.
Right-arm medium pacer Loreen Tshuma was the pick of the Lady Chevrons bowlers with three wickets for six runs in four overs while Nyasha Gwanzura claimed two wickets for four runs in 1.4 overs.
The winner of tomorrow’s match will meet the second placed team in Group B, which consists of Uganda, Namibia, Nigeria and Rwanda for a place in the final.
