THE Lady Chevrons have one final chance to end their T20I series against South Africa on a high when the two sides meet in the fifth and final match at Queens Sports Club today.
South Africa have already wrapped up the series 4-0, but Zimbabwe captain Josephine Nkomo believes a disciplined all-round performance could help the hosts prevent the Proteas from completing a clean sweep.
“We need one of the guys in the top four batting through and probably getting a half century and then have one of the bowlers getting at least three wickets,” said Nkomo.
That simple formula highlights where Zimbabwe have fallen short throughout the series, with the hosts struggling to sustain pressure with both bat and ball for extended periods.
In Thursday’s fourth T20I, South Africa’s Miane Smit turned a promising start into a maiden T20I century, blasting 102 off 59 balls as the visitors amassed 205 for four.
Zimbabwe, in contrast, were unable to build momentum in their reply and closed on 125 for five. Beloved Biza top-scored with 32, while Nkomo contributed an unbeaten 26 and Michelle Mavunga struck a brisk 25 from just 13 deliveries.
Today’s final match offers Zimbabwe another opportunity to address those shortcomings.
With the ball, they must make early breakthroughs and prevent South Africa from developing the partnerships that have repeatedly laid the platform for late-innings acceleration.
The challenge with the bat is equally straightforward. Zimbabwe need one of their top-order batters to produce a substantial innings, allowing the rest of the line-up to bat around a settled player rather than being forced into a high-risk pursuit from the outset.
Nkomo’s call for a half-century and a three-wicket haul also underlines the importance of match-winning individual performances. Against a side of South Africa’s calibre, brief cameos and isolated bowling spells have proved insufficient.
Zimbabwe will also take encouragement from the experience gained against quality opposition, with Nkomo acknowledging the value of testing themselves against South Africa.
Today, however, the focus shifts from lessons learned to delivering results on the field.
South Africa will be determined to complete a 5-0 series sweep, while Zimbabwe have an opportunity to secure a consolation victory and end the campaign with renewed confidence and something tangible to build on.
