Zimbabwe booked a place at the All Africa Games women’s cricket final with a five-wicket win over Nigeria yesterday.
The Lady Chevrons will now face South Africa in tomorrow’s final guaranteed a medal.
At stake will be more than the gold medal but to write their piece of history by becoming the first country to win the All Africa Games cricket gold medal.
On their road to the final, the Lady Chevrons maintained an unbeaten run at the games winning all their matches which included three group matches before beating Nigeria by five wickets in a semi-final clash played at Achimota Senior Secondary School in Ghana yesterday afternoon.
In yesterday’s match, Nigeria won the toss and opted to bat first.
Zimbabwe’s tight bowling ensured that Nigeria was restricted to 74 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
Kelis Ndhlovu and Loreen Tshuma claimed three wickets each while Precious Marange, Josephine Nkomo, and Lindokhule Mabhero claimed a wicket each.
Chasing a total of 75 runs, Zimbabwe had a slow start as the opening pair of Modester Mupachikwa and Sharne Mayers managed just two runs inside the opening two overs.
Zimbabwe were to lose their first wicket in the fifth over when Mayers was bowled by Peculiar Agboya for five runs.
After a slow start, Mupachikwa top scored for the Lady Chevrons with 26 runs off 43 balls.
Lady Chevron’s skipper Mary-Anne Musonda was the second-highest scorer with 18 off 19 balls while Nkomo scored scored 13 runs off 14 balls.
