A DISCIPLINED all-round performance propelled Zimbabwe Women to a commanding 33-run victory over the United Arab Emirates in the third One Day International cricket match, clinching a crucial 2-1 series lead.
Electing to bat first at Queens Sports Club, the hosts posted a competitive 203 for 7 from their 50 overs.
The total was built on the back of Loryn Phiri’s resilient 69 in 94 deliveries.
The Lady Chevrons were also inspired to victory by Josephine Nkomo’s 52 in 76 deliveries, which proved key for Zimbabwe.
Phiri and Nkomo’s half centuries laid the foundation for a much-needed victory by the home team.
The innings required tenacity, as the UAE’s bowlers, led by captain Esha Oza (2/29), Induna Nandakumar (2/35), and Thilini Shashikala (2/52), kept the run rate in check with regular wickets.
The UAE’s chase never found its rhythm against a relentless Zimbabwean bowling attack.
Spinner Lindokuhle Mabhero was the chief destroyer against the visitors, delivering a masterclass in control to claim 3 for 21 from her 10 overs, effectively strangling the middle order.
She received staunch support from Adel Zimunu (2/29), as the visitors were consistently stifled.
Despite a fighting 40 from UAE’s Heena Hotchandani, her team consistently lost partners at critical junctures.
Wickets fell at regular intervals, and the required run rate steadily climbed, pushing the UAE into a position of desperation.
They ultimately finished their 50 overs at 170 for 8, falling well short of the target.
The victory marks a significant turnaround for Zimbabwe, who now head into the fourth and final ODI with the series firmly within their grasp.
But the visitors will be seeking to level the series.
