Lake Kariba RIDA ferry disaster death toll rises to 93

THE death toll in the Kariba Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) boat accident has risen to 93, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.

In a statement, ZRP said the death toll had reached 93 as at 11am.

The police also released the names of 39 victims who have been positively identified by their next of kin.

This brings the total number of victims identified to 83, following the identification of 44 victims on August 14, 2026.

Among the victims identified are Jeremiah Chakabvapasi (32), a male adult from 171 Nyamhunga 1, Kariba; Mereki Hwani (54), a male adult from Penyai Village, Chief Dandawa, Magunje and Tanatswa Ncube (10), a female juvenile from Mujokeri Village, Chief Mola, Siakobvu.

Also identified are Siadembe Richard Junior (2), a male juvenile from 8774 Chiedza, Karoi, Eken Kapandura (2), a male juvenile from Kalundu Village, Chief Mola, Siakobvu, Beauty George (29), a female adult from Gatchegatche Fishing Camps, Kariba, and Noah Msaka (40), a male adult from 528 Nyamhunga 2, Kariba.

The other identified victims named by police are Trish Mangoroma (21), a female adult from 1166 Nyamhunga 2, Kariba, Lungulani Sianjema (4), a female juvenile from Sierra Village, Nyamakate, Hurungwe, and Mitchel Jeke (7), a female juvenile from 8794 Chiedza, Karoi.

Police said the 39 names released had been positively identified by the victims’ next of kin.

The latest update brings the number of identified victims to 83, while the overall death toll from the RIDA boat accident now stands at 93.
