A 38-YEAR-OLD tenant from Zvishavane has been sentenced to 10 months for assaulting his landlady who had reprimanded him for cooking sugar beans on his electric stove yet he was failing to pay for electricity.

Rangarirai Sharara appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Mr Shepherd Mnjanja facing one count of assaulting his landlady Ms Mahwembo Kumbirai (32).

He was convicted on his own plea of guilty and was sentenced to 10 months.

Mr Mnjanja however suspended five months of Sharara’s sentence on condition of good behavior.

The remaining five months were also suspended on condition Sharara completes 172 hours of community service at Mandava High School in Zvishavane town.

Passing sentence, Mr Mnjanja said violence was not the solution in the face of any misunderstanding in society.

“The accused person pleaded guilty thereby did not waste the court’s time. He is 38 years old, married with three children. While in aggravation he caused serious injuries to the complainant he is sentenced to 10 months in prison of which five months are suspended on condition of good behaviour. A further five months are suspended on condition he completes 172 hours of community service at Mandava High School in Zvishavane and we hope it will meet the justice of this case,” said Mr Mnjanja.”

It was the State case that on May 15 around 10pm, a misunderstanding arose between Sharara and Ms Mahwembo over an issue of boiling sugar beans on an electric stove.

Ms Mahwembo found Sharara boiling sugar beans on his stove and confronted him before switching off his electric stove.

The court heard the landlady’s action did not go well with Sharara who then slapped her once on the face and went on to assault her several times with fists all over the face.

Ms Mahwembo the court heard sustained a swollen face.

She reported the matter to the police leading to Sharara’s arrest.

Mr Taurai Muzvimwe appeared for the State.
