The late mbira queen Chiwoniso Maraire is set to be honoured with the esteemed Stand Music Prize at the African Vibration Music Festival, which will be held on May 2-3 at the University of Texas, Dallas.

African Vibration Music Festival, in partnership with the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology at the University of Texas at Dallas, announced Chiwoniso and Dobet Gnahore as the 2025 recipients of the esteemed Stand Music Prize.

The Stand Music Prize, founded by Gram Tinashe Makwarimba, recognises African music veterans who have made lasting impacts on the genre through innovation and cultural preservation.

“These incredible artists represent the bold spirit and timeless soul of African music.

“Honouring them at the University of Texas at Dallas, a partner that deeply values cultural diplomacy and artistic heritage, is a momentous step in our shared journey to uplift Africa’s narrative,” said Makwarimba.

The Stand Music Prize ceremony will be held during the African Forum.

African Vibration Music Festival celebrates the rich musical diversity of Africa, bringing together artists from across the continent and beyond.

The presentation will be delivered by Hilda Suka Mafudze, African Union Ambassador to the United States, and Dr. Nils Roemer, Dean of the Harry W. Bass School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology at The University of Texas at Dallas.

Musician Tamy Moyo, who is also set to perform at the same festival, expressed her excitement about sharing the stage with award-winning Ivorian singer-songwriter Dobet Gnahoré.

Tamy’s upcoming performance with Dobet Gnahoré is expected to showcase the unique blend of their styles and cultural influences.

The music diva will also share the stage with Watusi, one of the USA’s top reggae/world beat collectives, Ebony Payne, Zar Electrik, Sakidi, and many more.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity, and I am really grateful for this chance to share my craft with the world. We are still riding high on the wave of the Bold album. Dobet is a storied performer with whom I am excited to share the stage and deliver an unforgettable experience for the fans who are attending.

“Getting this kind of invitation to share my craft globally is testimony of how our Zimbabwean sound is rich and exciting enough to other cultures there.

“It’s a chance to share my music with a new audience and learn from Dobet’s experiences. I’m sure the performance will be an unforgettable experience for the audience,” she said.

The festival has become a platform for artists to share their music, promote cross-cultural understanding, and celebrate the continent’s vibrant musical heritage.

With its diverse lineup of artists and performances, the African Vibration Music Festival promises to be an exciting celebration of African music and culture.
