Twelve people died while another was seriously injured in an accident after a Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus they were travelling in veered off the road, overturned and rolled several times before landing on its roof along the Gweru-Maboleni road Tuesday evening.

The accident occurred at around 7. 20 pm at the 46 km peg when the driver of the commuter omnibus lost control after failing to negotiate a curve. The vehicle then veered off the road, overturned and rolled several times before landing on its roof.

Eleven people died on the spot while another died on admission at Gweru Provincial Hospital where the other injured survivor is said to be battling for life.

According to police sources, the omnibus, which was travelling towards Dhimbamhihwa business center in Lower Gweru, had 13 people on board when the accident occurred.
