Over 200 tonnes of maize is urgently required to feed more than 3 000 families displaced by flooding of Tokwe-Mukosi Dam.
The displaced people are at Chingwizi Holding Camp and were left without much by way of food after another tragedy struck when rains destroyed 30 tonnes of mealie-meal there last week.
Mwenezi district administrator Mr Stanley Chamisa on Monday said only 4,5 tonnes of mealie-meal was left and this was insufficient to feed the families.
“We are happy that food donations have been coming after our entire mealie-meal stocks were damaged last week but the quantities are not enough. We have very little food in our stocks at the moment which is not enough to feed the high number of people in the camp at the moment,” he said.
A bigger and more secure tent has been erected at Chingwizi for food storage, but Mr Chamisa said more shelter was required for hundreds of families living in the open.
Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Kudakwashe Bhasikiti last week toured the camp to assess the damage caused by the hailstorm that destroyed tents and food.
He assured families that Government was going to speed up their relocation to permanent plots to ease congestion at the camp.
