The Harare City Council received ten 80 horsepower tractors valued at US$345 000 last Friday that were bought under the US$144 million Chinese loan facility meant to rehabilitate the city’s water and sewerage systems.
Acting Mayor Clr Chris Mbanga received the tractors.
He said five of the tractors would be deployed to the city’s water department for grass cutting at water and sewer treatment plants, while the other five would be deployed for community service delivery to the department of housing and community services.
Clr Mbanga said some of the tractors would be deployed for grass cutting in the wards along the major thoroughfares.
“These tractors were bought locally and they are part of our efforts to improve service delivery in Harare. We will make good use of these tractors. We are working at having a tractor for each of the city’s wards”, he said.
Town Clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi said more of the equipment bought under the Chinese loan would be commissioned as it arrives in the country.
The loan deal has turned controversial after allegations emerged that council officials could have pocketed millions of dollars by inflating the prices of some of the equipment to be procured.
