Olympic gold medalist champion and Zimbabwe flag-bearer at the 2016 Rio Games, Kirsty Coventry, will tonight be in action when takes part in the 200m backstroke women’s final.
After coming short in the 100m backstroke, where she bowed out at the semi-final stage, this event will be the 32-year-old’s last chance at adding to her Olympic medal haul.
Coventry qualified for tonight’s final with a time of 2:08.83, which was the sixth best overall time.
Standing in her way of yet another Olympic gold medal will be pre-race favorites Katinka Hosszu of Hungary and Maya Dirado of the United States.
Hosszu already has three gold medals to her name at these Games after winning the 100m backstroke, and 400m and 200m Individual medley events.
Dirado, who also has three medals to her name, has won a gold, silver and bronze. She won the 4X200m relay with the American women’s team, was second in the 400m Individual medley and third in the 200m Individual medley.
The 200m final backstroke, which is Coventry’s favourite event, begins at 9pm Zimbabwean time.
