Lavrov — no serious US proposals for talks on Ukraine so far

Moscow has so far not received any serious proposals for talks on Ukraine from Washington, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told Rossiya-1 television yesterday.

“We have not yet received any serious proposals for contact.

“We were approached by some, not quite seriously though, and we did not reject those approaches either, but offered to formulate specific proposals with which those people could contact us through indirect channels. We never received any more specifics from anyone,” Russia’s top diplomat said.

Lavrov also slammed as lies US allegations that Russia is refusing to take part in talks on Ukraine.

“We have heard statements by US officials, including the White House’s Mr. [John] Kirby, my counterpart [Antony] Blinken, and other administration officials, saying they are open to talks with Russia while seeking a political solution to the situation in and around Ukraine, but that Russia is so evil that it has refused to negotiate. I can tell you outright that those are lies,” the Russian foreign minister emphasised.

Russia will be ready to consider a proposal for a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the G20 summit, if it is made, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

“We have said many times that we never refuse to hold meetings.

“If a proposal is received, we will consider it,” Lavrov said in reply to a question about the prospects for such a meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit. If everyone thinks that there is already a sign of Biden’s readiness for such a meeting, there is nothing but his “We’ll see” remark to rely on Lavrov said. “This is probably good for journalistic analytical speculations, but not for real politics,” he added.

The United States has long been involved in the conflict in Ukraine de facto and arming the regime in Kiev.

“The way I see it, de facto the Americans have been participating in this war for a long time. They are not only arming Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and his regime.

“They are providing intelligence data from satellites,” Lavrov said, while commenting on US President Joe Biden’s promise in a conversation with Zelensky to continue to support Kiev with military hardware, including air defence systems.

Lavrov recalled that commercial satellites were also involved, saying that now they are “at the service of military plans for supporting the neo-Nazi regime.”

“Incidentally, this, by the way, emphasises the relevance of our long-standing initiative to prevent an arms race in outer space,” he added.

As Lavrov noted, the Russian president has repeatedly stated that Russian nuclear doctrine only provides for retaliatory measures aimed at preventing Russia’s destruction through direct nuclear strikes that pose a threat to the existence of the Russian state.

Those who keep speculating on the issue of nuclear war and an alleged nuclear threat from Moscow should be mindful of their responsibilities, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

“I hope that those who keep speculating on the issue of nuclear war and making allegations about Russia staging provocations involving weapons of mass destruction understand their responsibilities,” he pointed out.

When asked about the possibility of a nuclear war, the Russian foreign minister said: “The [Russian] president has repeatedly stated that our nuclear doctrine only provides for retaliatory measures aimed at preventing Russia’s destruction through direct nuclear strikes or attacks involving other types of weapons that pose a threat to the existence of the Russian state.”

“I would now advise the Americans and their satellites, who are also involved in such exercises, and not only them, but also our analysts and political scientists, to show maximum responsibility when making public remarks,” the top diplomat emphasised.

He pointed to some media publications that downplayed the damage from a potential nuclear war.

“I believe that it’s irresponsible journalism and I hope that both journalists and political scientists will refrain from playing such games,” Lavrov noted.

“I appeal through you to all those who are interested in this situation and this issue, trying to cover it in the public media: don’t hype it up artificially,” the Russian foreign minister added.

The United States and its satellites should exercise the utmost caution when making remarks about a possible nuclear conflict.

“I would now advise the Americans and their satellites, who are also involved in such exercises, and not only them, but also our analysts and political scientists, to show maximum responsibility when making public remarks,” he pointed out.
