THE third edition of the National Annual Science, Sport and Arts Festival (NASSAF) kicked off in Gweru yesterday with students from primary and secondary schools from all provinces participating.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is hosting the festival at Chaplin High School after it was shelved temporarily due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

NASSAF is meant to showcase products and projects done by learners under the new curriculum.

Each province has a delegation of about 50 learners to the festival that is ending tomorrow.

Learners are being given the opportunity to showcase skills, knowledge, values and attitude in disciplines such as in technical graphics, wood technology and design, drawing, karate, educational gymnastics, marimba, brass and electric band, mass displays, athletics, food technology exhibitions, heritage, stone sculpture exhibitions, basketry, metal technology and design exhibitions, fish farming, contemporary dance, ICT and Olympiads.

The ministry’s communication and advocacy director, Mr Taungana Ndoro, said the festival is running under the theme “Promoting competence-based curriculum.”

“The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education considers the National Annual Science, Sport and Arts Festival as a tool that provides opportunities to sustain, grow and further popularise learner exit profiles,” he said.

Mr Ndoro said the festival showcases the depth to which the competence-based curriculum is being implemented in schools and also shows how schools are acquiring teaching and learning materials.

The festival, he added, provides an opportunity for learners to showcase their talents on story-telling, science exhibitions, performing arts and sporting.

“The festival had been shelved temporarily due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The ministry will continue to use the festival as a vehicle that measures the efficiency and effectiveness of the application concepts in the competence-based curriculum,” said Mr Ndoro.

The festival will be officially opened by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Torerayi Moyo today.
