Legends to hold free coaching session

NAMIBIA-BASED trio of former Emakhandeni Tennis Club coaches will tomorrow hold a one-day free coaching session for young players at the centre.

The coaches, Wellington Sibanda, Mkhululi Khuphe and Nqobilizwe Moyo, beneficiaries of the National Tennis Development (NTD) during the 1980s which was administered by Larry Kats, will impart their knowledge to up-and-coming tennis players.

Witness Jiyane, Emakhandeni Tennis Club chairman said the club is pleased to welcome back its legends.

“The free coaching session will go a long way in developing the young talent in our club. It is humbling to see the former coaches who were fundamental in this club coming back to promote talent.

“The skills and tactics that they will impart to our players will help them grow and approach matches in an advanced professional manner. These coaches reputations are unquestionable as they’ve produced great talent and are still doing so in Namibia,” Jiyane said.

He said the coaches decided to take part in the initiative as a way of giving back to the community.

The clinic is meant to motivate and inspire young players.

“Most of the guys have vowed to take part in the process of reviving the club and they have done that through various contributions. Recently, Wellington (Sibanda) donated balls and Mkhululi (Khuphe) chipped in and transported them from Namibia to Bulawayo,” said Jiyane.

Sibanda and Khuphe hold level 2 coaching certificates and the former played a pivotal role in developing Noel Wadawu who is based in US.

Sibanda also coached Dumiso Khumalo who played at Junior Wimbledon during his stint in Spain where he played alongside Rafal Nadal at junior level. Switzerland based Fadzai Madzimamutho was also groomed by Sibanda.
