Legislators praise for VP Nkomo

The Herald, August 9, 1990

PARLIAMENTARIANS yesterday showered praise on Vice President Nkomo for his patriotism, high quality of leadership and consistency in the fight against colonial rule.

Speaking during adjournment debate, the Minister of Home Affairs, Cde Moven Mahachi, said the elevation of Cde Nkomo to Vice President was the final seal of the unity between the principal political parties.

The leadership of President Mugabe and the two Vice-Presidents – Cde Nkomo and Cde Muzenda – would be undermined if followers turned out to be corrupt, tribalistic and regionalistic as well as becoming rumour-mongers.

He called on Zimbabweans to guard their political independence and consolidate unity.

“Let us consolidate it, even to shed blood for it. We must vow that this country will never be divided again. I appeal to all that let us defend the gains that the country has so far made,” he said.

 LESSONS FOR TODAY

The late Vice President Joshua Nkomo is one of the most notable founding fathers of modern Zimbabwe. He dedicated most of his life to fighting colonialism.

As the country remembers its sons and daughters of the soil who paid the ultimate sacrifice to liberate the country, we honour and pay tribute to Father Zimbabwe.

It is good to give credit where it is due. Cde Nkomo was an outstanding nationalist and his legacy will endure forever.

As Zimbabweans commemorate Heroes Day it is important for us to cherish and safeguard the independence that came through the blood that was shed.
