Lessons from a heartbreak

After hearing recent disturbing real life stories of individuals whose pain of heartbreak resulted in them losing all hope or harming themselves, I’m back on this topic which some, who have never struggled with heartbreak might take lightly.

While heartbreak is part of growing in relationships, it can be overwhelming, haijairike zvayo. However, rather than see doom and gloom, I have grown to view heartbreak as one of life’s most uninvited teachers.

It arrives without warning, rearranges your world, and leaves you wondering if you will ever feel whole again.

In the school of romantic relationships, heartbreak should not be a dead end — it is a classroom.

And if we lean in, we can graduate from it stronger, wiser, and more anchored in God’s love than ever before.

The hidden curriculum of heartbreak

When love ends, it is easy to focus on the loss, which can feel as though the whole world has collapsed around you. But heartbreak teaches lessons no textbook can offer:

Your worth is not negotiable — A breakup does not diminish your value. You are still fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).

Love is not meant to be forced — True love flows freely; it doesn’t need to be begged for or chased.

Boundaries are holy — Heartbreak often reveals where we ignored red flags or compromised too much. It’s a call to guard your heart (Proverbs 4:23).

God’s timing is perfect — Sometimes, the ending is His protection, redirecting you toward His best.

Bouncing back from broken to beautiful

Healing is not about “getting over it” — it is about growing through it.  I found these tips great for how to rise again:

Anchor your hope in God, not in people, least of all the one who contributed to the heartbreak

People can disappoint, but God never fails. Shift your focus from who left to who remains. Spend time in prayer, worship, and scripture. Let His promises be the balm for your soul.

Allow yourself to grieve

Suppressing pain only delays healing. Cry if you must. Journal your thoughts. Talk to a trusted friend or mentor. Healing begins when you acknowledge the wound.

Rebuild your identity

Sometimes we lose ourselves in relationships. With one quarter of this year left, I suggest using this season to rediscover your passions, gifts, and dreams. Take up that hobby, enrol in that course, or start that project you have been postponing. Nowadays there are so many short courses that help you use your time to upskill. That is something no one can take away from you.

Surround yourself with life-giving people

Isolation feeds despair. Seek out friends, family, and faith communities that speak life into you and remind you of your worth.

Release, do not retain

Forgive — not because they deserve it, but because you deserve peace. Unforgiveness keeps you tied to the past; forgiveness frees you for the future. What unforgiveness does, is cause you to continue to rehearse the pain instead of letting it go, the very pain that is hurting you.

With unforgiveness you literally hold on to the hurt. The enemy wins when you wallow in pain and misery. Purpose in your heart to not be the person magnifying the pain, opening the ‘files’ everyday, thereby opening the wound every day and  worsening the situation by rehearsing it over and over. I suggest you let it play out but it must go at some point. When you are ready, let it go.

Prepare for the new season

Your God-ordained partner is not just “on the way” — they are being prepared, just as you are. Use this time to become the person you would want to meet: emotionally healthy, spiritually grounded, and purpose-driven. I have often expressed the fairness of such an approach to relationships.

Why you can have hope

God is the Author of your love story. If a chapter has closed, it is because He has written something better ahead. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us: “For I know the plans I have for you… plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Your future spouse will not complete you — only God can do that. But they will complement the healed, whole, and purpose-filled person you are becoming.

Heartbreak may feel like the end, but in God’s hands, it is a beginning. You are not defined by who walked away, but by who walks with you. Trust His timing, embrace the lessons, and step forward with faith.

Your heart will beat with joy again. Your laughter will return. And when the right person arrives — in God’s perfect time — you will be ready, not because you waited idly, but because you grew beautifully in the waiting.

Your turn to speak life

I have shared my heart here, but this conversation is bigger than my words — it is about our shared journey of healing, hope, and faith. No matter how many times one may have heard it before, there so if this piece has stirred something in you — a thought, a question, or even just rings a bell — I would love to hear from you. Your reflections might be the very encouragement someone else needs to take their next brave step forward.

And if you have walked through heartbreak and found your way to the other side, would you consider sharing your story?

With your permission, we may feature it in a future article so that your testimony can become someone else’s lifeline.  You never know whose midnight your sunrise could light.

Drop your thoughts, questions, or stories in the comments, or send them directly to the details below. Let’s keep building a community where no one has to heal alone — and where we remind each other that God’s best is always worth the wait.
