GOVERNMENT has instructed Midlands State University to allow students on cadetship support scheme who have fees arrears to graduate at today’s graduation ceremony.MSU had intended to bar students on cadetship from graduating over non-payment of fees. The graduation ceremony would be held at the institution’s Multipurpose Hall.
In an interview soon after commissioning of a 63-seater bus, a Mazda BT 50 and an eight seater minibus at Gweru Polytechnic College yesterday, permanent secretary for Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Dr Washington Mbizvo said all students, including those on cadetship, were graduating as opposed to the institution’s plans.
“I have spoken to the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Dr Olivia Muchena over the matter,” he said.
“The position of the ministry is that all students, including those on cadetship are going to graduate. This position has been communicated to MSU. I also had a meeting with Vice Chancellor Professor Ngwabi Bhebhe over that matter.
“We resolved that the students would graduate.”
Hundreds of students were stranded after authorities at the institution insisted that only fully paid up students would be allowed to graduate.
Concerned parents and students said a majority of students who were set to graduate were on cadetship. MSU registrar Erasmus Mupfiga was quoted on Wednesday as saying the institution had advertised in newspapers that only paid up students would graduate.
