THE countdown is almost over.
The gloves are laced, the ring is ready and Bulawayo is bracing for a day of bruising battles as some of Zimbabwe’s finest amateur boxers converge at Palace Hotel on Friday 31 August for what promises to be an explosive national tournament.
Organised by the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) in partnership with Palace Hotel, the tournament is expected to attract leading boxing clubs from across the country, with every bout carrying the potential to launch the next generation of national champions.
For the fighters, it is more than just another competition. It is a chance to make a statement, impress national selectors and prove they have what it takes to climb the ranks of Zimbabwean boxing.
ZBF technical director Steven Masiyambumbi believes all the ingredients are in place for an unforgettable spectacle, with clubs arriving well prepared for a day of fierce competition.
“This tournament is shaping up to be one of the most exciting we have staged in Bulawayo. We expect high-quality contests because the clubs have been working hard and every boxer understands the importance of performing well,” said Masiyambumbi.
“These competitions are vital for the development of the sport. They give our athletes valuable experience in the ring while also allowing us as a federation to monitor talent for future national team commitments. Every event plays a part in strengthening Zimbabwean boxing.”
Masiyambumbi also applauded Palace Hotel for continuing to support amateur boxing.
“We are grateful to Palace Hotel for partnering with us once again. Such partnerships are essential because they help us take boxing to different communities and provide opportunities for young athletes to compete. We are confident the fans will enjoy an entertaining day of boxing.”
Palace Hotel proprietor Tapiwa Gandiwa said excitement was building ahead of the tournament and encouraged Bulawayo residents to rally behind the sport.
“We are delighted to host another national boxing tournament and everything is now in place. Our goal is to give both the boxers and the spectators a memorable experience,” said Gandiwa.
“Bulawayo has always had knowledgeable boxing supporters and we are looking forward to seeing them fill the venue. This is a family event where people will witness talented young athletes giving everything they have inside the ring.”
An impressive list of clubs is expected to compete, including Black Rhinos, HQ 1 Brigade, 5 Brigade, Air Force of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Harare, Midlands, Victoria Falls Boxing Academy, Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy, Masvingo, Gwanda, Hwange and Beitbridge.
With pride, medals and reputations on the line, the stage is set for an afternoon where every punch could change a career.
When the opening bell sounds at Palace Hotel on Saturday, there will be no hiding place. It will be all about courage, heart and skill as Bulawayo once again becomes the beating heart of Zimbabwean boxing.
