Zimbabwe Defence Forces commander Dr Constantine Chiwenga on Sunday called for more social responsibility programmes as they not only help in maintaining peace and stability, but also in development. Dr Chiwenga was speaking at the Air Force of Zimbabwe charity horse and air day which he said was meant to pool resources to less privileged members of society.

“Charitable events by the defence forces and other security organisations should be regarded as opportunities for the cross pollination of ideas and showcasing our capabilities as we seek to propel our country to greater heights,” he said.

“As defence forces, charity programmes and community assistance initiatives have become a way of expressing our appreciation to the community from which we originate. AFZ has also done these events to raise funds and nurture sound relationships between the ZDF and the public.”

Dr Chiwenga said the ZDF has complete and ongoing projects to assist the less privileged.

“Today we are witnessing some of the efforts that are being implemented towards the goal of assisting communities by the AFZ,” he said.

“We appreciate that proceeds from this event have managed to make a huge difference at Murongwe primary school in Dande district.

“As we speak, teachers’ houses and a clinic have been completed.”
