HERACLITUS the Greek philosopher once said: “Even the largest of fires starts from a tiny spark. That same potential is within us. So let’s set our dreams on fire.”
This old philosophical saying proved true for young Ray Newby of Stockton, California, who at a tender age of 16 in 1909 became the world’s first and famous disc jockey or DJ.
From a humble and poor background and a life mingled with misery, penury and semi starvation, Ray defeated all the odds by following on his passion, that of music. Ray Newby, being the first DJ appeared on the music scene before the term DJ ever existed. The word Disc Jockey was coined sometime in 1935 by an
American radio commentator named Walter Winchell.
About 74 years later after the advent of Ray Newby, thousands of kilometres away from California, and across vast expanses of oceans, in the continent of Africa, a Christian couple, Mr and Mrs Ngozo of Sizinda Township, in Bulawayo, were blessed with a healthy and bouncing baby boy on a warm Saturday afternoon on 24 April of 1983, at Mpilo Central Hospital, in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
The young child was christened Carlos Ngozo. From the tender age of six, Carlos displayed a very big and amazing love for music.
He was in the church choir and in the school choir at Maphisa Primary School where he did his primary education from 1990 up to 1996. Carlos became the best student in Mr Mpofu’s music class during those years, and it is no surprise that young Carlos scooped all music prizes for the seven years that he was at Maphisa Primary School.
In 1997, Carlos enrolled for his secondary school education at Ihlathi Secondary School in Tshabalala Township, Bulawayo. It was during his time at Ihlathi Secondary School that the “tiny sparks” began to emerge from Carlos.
He was very knowledgeable in music and he knew almost all of the trending songs by heart and could sing them so marvellously. On weekends Carlos would spend most of his time playing and listening to music. Carlos was now attending disco shows and would be asked to be the DJ.
Carlos Ngozo, is today, no other than the famous firebrand Disc Jockey who is to be found officiating as a DJ and Master of Ceremony at all functions within and without Sizinda Township.
Carlos is of a tall and slender stature, with a slightly deep baritone voice, which has the effect of mesmerising and wooing large crowds from all over the city of Bulawayo, and always leaves his fans begging for more action.
Carlos, “Big C”, as he is affectionately known in the music industry, parlays a friendly, versatile voice, and an ear for mimicry, improvisational wit, edgy humour, and a strong camaraderie with his fans.
Carlos prides himself on preparation on his “deejaying”, and his stage work is ever so fascinating and matches his brash high energy.
Besides being a Disc Jockey, Carlos has become a very popular Master of Ceremony, who has made many weddings, graduations, bar mitzvahs, celebrity toasts and birthday parties an event never to forget. His mastery of expressive effects has made him one of the most distinctive Master of Ceremonies in Bulawayo.
As a Master of Ceremony, Carlos always radiates confidence and charisma to keep the ceremony entertaining. The ever-smiling Carlos always reinforces the fun and light-hearted ambiance of all the events that he officiates at.
His great sense of humour always works the crowd and creates a fun and energetic atmosphere.
During his spare time, which he rarely gets because of his ever busy schedule, Carlos likes listening to music and collecting music.
He also likes going out and likes camping. Big C loves traditional dishes, with okra (idelele) and sadza being his favourite dish. He is in a healthy relationship with a beautiful and sparkling young lady.
Carlos’s inspiration came from a host of DJs, inter-alia, Black Coffee, Oskido, Culoe and Shimza. The ever-relaxed and flexible Carlos has now turned into a professional DJ and Master of Ceremonies.
At every event, he has mastered the art of creating a comfortable relationship between himself and the crowd. Carlos is a natural at his job, and he does it so perfectly with much ease and confidence.
Sizinda Township residents are proud to have one of their own sons, Carlos “Big C” Ngozo, who is helping put the name Sizinda on the map through his brilliant DJ work. Carlos is slowly but surely becoming a household name in all parts of Zimbabwe and indeed in neighbouring countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique.
Carlos Ngozo has set his dream on fire. Well done Carlos. Keep up the good work. “Zikomo bambo Ngozo.”
