Let’s welcome back returnees, new supporters: Machacha

George Maponga, Masvingo Bureau

ZANU PF National Political Commissar Cde Munyaradzi Machacha has called on party members to take advantage of the ongoing cell restructuring exercise to embark on mobilisation and recruitment to grow the ruling party’s support base.

Addressing a ruling party inter-district meeting to take stock of the cell restructuring at Masvingo Polytechnic on Saturday, Cde Machacha said under the stewardship of President Mnangagwa, Zanu PF had potential to further grow and entrench its position as the undisputed dominant political force in Zimbabwe.

He also debunked the myth that urban areas were opposition strongholds saying a closer analysis of previous election results showed that both the ruling party and the opposition only got a fraction of the votes, with the majority of voters choosing to refrain from going to vote altogether.

High voter apathy in urban areas showed that the majority of potential voters were not decided on who to vote for, said Cde Machacha, hence the ruling party should take advantage of the situation to woo them.

“I want to appeal to all of you to make sure that you welcome back all those who are coming back from the opposition to join Zanu PF. You must embrace them and even give them positions in the party in the ongoing restructuring.

“We want as many people as possible in those cells and when they become too big you can even create additional cells. You must take a cue from President Mnangagwa who has been leading from the front preaching love and unity in the party as we grow our country’s economy towards Vision 2030,” said Cde Machacha.

Zimbabwe’s economy, he added, was rebounding and on a growth trajectory as evidenced by infrastructural projects taking place around the country.

Turning to Zanu PF legislators, Cde Machacha decried the presence of “absent MPs” who are missing in action and not visiting their constituencies to maintain a connection with the people.

”It’s not even a question of having money in one’s pocket. Even an MP who has no money should go back to the people and spearhead development, connecting the people and various implementers of developmental programmes and projects in the Government.

“We want our MPs to maintain contact with the people who voted them into office and not disappear from the radar.”

In some constituencies that were known ruling party strongholds, said Cde Machacha, the opposition was beginning to have a presence because it was taking advantage of a gap created by absent MPs.

The meeting was attended by top Zanu PF leaders in Masvingo including Politburo members Cdes Lovemore Matuke and Paul Mangwana and Central Committee member and Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira, among others.
