Letters to the Editor: Let’s honour the bond of family this festive season

Eddious Masundire Shumba, Mawani Primary School, Mberengwa

This year is coming to an end and most parents say they are not happy with the treatment they have received from their children.

Although I agree that things are not good for most people in the country at the moment but it is not right for children to forget about their parents.

It’s very sad that many young people these days think only about themselves and forget to take care of their parents.

The Bible is very clear about this when it says honour your parents so that God can increase the days of your life on this earth but this is not what we see from most people these days.

We have parents in the rural areas with no child to look after them. Some parents are suffering with no food to eat in the rural areas while their sons and daughters are busy enjoying in the cities and towns with their lovers.

I am not saying people should leave their jobs to go to stay with their parents in the rural areas, no, I am saying while we are in urban areas we must not forget where we come from.

We are where we are today as a result of the same parents we are neglecting today.

They are the ones who worked very hard for us to go to school and get the diplomas and degrees we have today so it is very important for us to pay back by making sure that our parents get whatever they need for them to survive.

Some parents go to the point of failing to find some few dollars to grind maize so that they have a meal on their tables when their sons are driving top of the range cars enjoying with their girlfriends.

God will not be happy with this kind of behaviour and he can not bless such people. Some daughters on the other hand will choose to spend a lot of money giving their boyfriends when their own parents have got nothing to wear or eat.

in extreme cases daughters-in-law are sending their husband’s parents to Old People’s Homes as they feel they are disturbing their lives with their spouses.

While it is not entirely bad to do so, in African culture it means that we don’t want to give them our maximum love anymore.

I urge all children to buy food and clothes for their parents this season so that they too enjoy the festive celebrations with others.

The issue of failing to take care of parents is not limited to locals only but extends to people living abroad who are also failing to take care of their parents in rural areas.

I hope to see a change in the near future.
