LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Passengers’ Association mourns cyclone victims

EDITOR –  As the Passengers’ Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ), we join the nation in mourning the loss of lives and livelihoods in the areas affected by Cyclone Idai here and in neighbouring countries.

We are disheartened by the fact that some buses attempted to cross flooded rivers’ bridges.

We advise drivers of passenger service vehicles to desist from attempting to cross flooded rivers, and we anticipate the speedy rehabilitation of road infrastructure destroyed by Cyclone Idai, although we are fully aware that given the circumstances the demands for assistance are many while resources -despite efforts by all stakeholders – cannot meet every pressing need.

Passengers’ Association of Zimbabwe acknowledges and salutes the concerted efforts made by the Government, the donor community, embassies, civil society groups and community-based organisations and many individuals including neighbours of victims of the cyclone in assisting the victims of the Cyclone Idai.

It is a trying time and our prayer remains that the homes, bridges and roads will be built soonest and that all of us will also work towards ensuring that victims get required access to clean water, sanitation and                                                                                       food.

The cyclone has passed but the effects remain and our fervent hope is that our Government does all in its power to lessen the burden of the affected families.

Our Government should ensure, that the Civil Protection Unit has adequate funding in order to directly warn people, evict people before the disaster, as a proactive initiative.

We as Zimbabweans must also play our part to help the victims. PAZ is encouraged by what we have seen the populace in general doing to ease the plight of Cyclone Idai victims. May we continue to give them all the help we can.

Passengers’ Association Zimbabwe.
