Letters to the Editor: Zimbabwe makes soccer mark

I can safely say that Zimbabwe has now arrived on the global football stage with several of our players raising the country’s flag high in some of the best leagues in the world.

Recently our own Marvelous Nakamba made his debut for Aston Villa in the English Premier League and, having impressed in that game, he was tasked to hold his club’s midfield in their game against Arsenal last weekend. He also put up a solid performance in that game and is proving to be a significant member of the team. Besides Nakamba, Marshall Munetsi also made his first league start in the French top side at Stade de Reims recently.

The debut was special with his coach putting faith in him to hold fort against the biggest team in France, PSG. What more could any football player ask for. He went toe to toe with the likes of Neymar and Di Maria. Munetsi had a brilliant game and even created one of the goals in their 2-0 win against the French champions. These are not the only soccer exports that are playing well.

We also have the likes of Tino Kadewere and Teenage Hadebe who are pulling their weight in Europe. This reminds me of the days when we had Peter Ndlovu tearing defences in the EPL or when Benjani Mwaruwari was competing for the top goal scorers’ title in the same league.

This is really good for the country as it will inspire future soccer stars and encourage scouts to come and look for more talent.
