Lifeline for Harare executives over retirement age extension

A recent Government decision to extend the official retirement age from 65 to 70 years has thrown a lifeline to Harare City Council top executives who were set to retire this year.

These include acting town clerk Engineer Phakamile Mabhena Moyo and acting finance director, Mr Godfrey Kusangaya, who will now have an extension of four more years.

The new policy is seen as a golden opportunity to retain institutional knowledge, strengthen corporate continuity, and offer experienced executives a renewed sense of purpose.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume said they are complying with the Government’s directive for those who still feel energetic.

“We received a circular on the retirement age of our workers, which Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe said should be 70 years. We are complying with that,” he said.
