Lifeline for hospitalised poet Abel Mauchi

The Reprographic Rights Organisation of Zimbabwe (RROZ) has thrown a vital lifeline to prominent poet Abel Mauchi, who is currently hospitalised at Masvingo General Hospital after collapsing on Wednesday.

The organisation has committed to covering all his medical expenses until he fully recovers, a move that has brought much-needed relief to the ailing artist and his family.

Mauchi, a well-known figure in Zimbabwe’s literary scene who also goes by the name ‘Shefu Mudhesve’, is undergoing tests to ascertain the exact nature of the disease he is suffering from.

His condition has caused great concern among the arts community, with many taking to social media to express their support and well-wishes for the poet’s swift recovery.

RROZ Chief Executive Officer Anthony Rimau visited the poet in hospital and confirmed the organisation’s intervention.

“We have taken on the poet’s bills, which includes paying for several tests and x-rays to determine the exact ailments,” Rimau said.

“RROZ is committed to membership welfare apart from collecting and distribution of royalties.”

The organisation’s swift response demonstrates its commitment to the welfare of its members beyond its primary mandate of collecting and distributing royalties for authors and publishers.

The Reprographic Rights Organisation of Zimbabwe is a government-approved Collective Management Organisation (CMO) established to administer reprographic rights in the country.

Licensed under the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act, RROZ is mandated to issue licences to entities involved in reproducing copyrighted works—including copy shops, libraries, and educational institutions—and collect royalties for authors and publishers.

It aims to combat piracy and ensure creators receive fair compensation for the reproduction of their literary works.

The poet’s brother, Abraham Mauchi, expressed profound gratitude to RROZ for the timely intervention, revealing that the family had no means to assist with the mounting medical care costs.

“We had no means to assist in the medical care, but RROZ stepped in at the right time,” Abraham said.

Mauchi’s journey in poetry began in 1992 while he was staying in Chitungwiza Seke Unit N, and he has since written over four thousand poems, claiming he can recite over a thousand of them from memory.

His talent for word-smithing has made him a popular figure at events across the country, though he has often spoken out about the exploitation he has faced throughout his career.

In a 2024 interview, a bitter Mauchi revealed that politicians, promoters, and online content creators have been exploiting his talent for nothing, using him only to promote their work while he remains struggling. Despite his struggles, Mauchi has continued to use his poetry to address socio-economic issues. Mauchi’s health challenges are not new. In 2021, he appealed for help with medical bills after a condition that caused him to vomit blood, and rumors of his death circulated on social media.

His personal life has also been marked by tragedy, having recently lost his wife, Lucia Chirume, to cancer in February 2026.

Mauchi’s case has once again highlighted the precarious situation facing many Zimbabwean artists.

Despite being a well-known figure with a prolific body of work, the poet has often been neglected by promoters, particularly in his home province of Masvingo.

The poet’s struggle for recognition and fair compensation reflects a broader crisis in Zimbabwe’s arts sector, where creators continue to face exploitation and financial hardship despite their significant contributions to the nation’s cultural landscape.

The intervention by RROZ may signal a shift toward greater support for artists, but many argue that more needs to be done to ensure creators receive the recognition and remuneration they deserve.
