AN 86-YEAR-OLD granny from Bulilima District lost all her property after lighting struck her homestead and destroyed two huts.

Madlambuzi Ward councillor, Mrs Jabeth Mlalazi, said the lightning struck the homestead belonging to Ms Sinani Nleya of Mpimbila Village on Saturday morning.

The 86-year-old is appealing to well-wishers to help her with food, clothes and blankets.

She said Ms Nleya who lives with her three grandchildren went to collect firewood only to return when her homestead was on fire.

“There is an old woman from a village within my ward who had two of her huts struck by lightning but luckily no one was harmed. She had gone to collect firewood and when she was on her way back around 7AM she saw a lightning bolt strike from a distance.

“She saw flames and assumed that a tree which was close to her homestead was on fire. When she got closer, she realised that her homestead was on fire. Her kitchen and bedroom huts were on fire,’’ she said.

Mrs Mlalazi said the old woman lost all the food that was stored in her kitchen hut.

She said Ms Nleya also lost clothes and blankets.

She said her grandchildren were sleeping in their hut but it was not damaged.

Mrs Mlalazi said her ward experienced violent winds and bolts of lightning on Saturday morning.

She said the granny was assisted by some villagers with food and clothes, but she still needs to be assisted with food, clothes and blankets.
