A 34-year-old man from Marukwaru Village in Kanyemba, Mbire District, was attacked and killed by a lion while digging for worms along the Zambezi River bank.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management public relations manager Mr Tinashe Farawo said the incident happened on December 31 last year. Mr Farawo said the death of Admire Kabareti brought the number of people who were killed by lions last year to three.

“We regret the unfortunate incident,” he said. “We urge people in that area to be on the look-out for wild animals. Kabareti’s body was discovered the following morning by Zimparks officials from Mbire District. They tracked the predator and it was eliminated. Last year we lost three people to lion attacks. Two in Chiredzi and the third is Kabareti. Investigations to establish where the lion came from are continuing and the matter was reported to the police.”
