REGISTRATION for the second edition of the Liquor Hub 10KM Fun Run and 5KM Charity Walk to be held in the city next month has opened.
City businessman Raj Modi is bankrolling the race to the tune of $10 000 and the Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab), which is coordinating the meet, believes the December 4 event will attract top-notch athletes.
Manuel Mpofu, Bab chairman, said registration fees for the event are pegged at $5 for seniors and $2 for juniors.
“As Bab we’re pleased to announce that registration for our last event of the year has opened. Those interested in participating in the race can register at the Liquor Hub Wholesale, along Fife Street. We encourage athletes to register on time to avoid last minute hustles because we expect all the country’s top runners to participate,” said Mpofu.
He said the top three in the senior men and women’s events will each get $500, $300 and $200.
The junior men’s and women’s first prize is $150, runners-up $100 and third-placed $50.
Wheelchair race winners in both the men’s and women’s categories will get $200 and runners-up $150.There are no prizes for the masters and grandmasters’ categories, with Mpofu saying the bulk of the sponsorship package will be donated to charity.
Mpofu said the race will start at Liquor Hub along Fife Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues. Athletes will run east along 4th Avenue past the Old Mutual Heath Streak Cricket Academy to the Khumalo Hockey Stadium and back into town via Leopold Takawira Avenue and finish at Liquor Hub.
2015 Old Mutual Soweto Marathon’s 10KM women’s winner Rutendo Nyahora won the inaugural Liquor Hub 10KM Fun Run in 34 minutes 54.23 seconds, while Kelvin Pangiso triumphed in the men’s category, crossing the line in 30 minutes 36.40 seconds.
Nyahora beat a strong field that included runner-up Constance Nyasango, who finished in 36 min 48.02s, Yvette Makamure (42 min 50.58s) and Linnet Tomu (46 min 33.86s).
Pangiso (30 min 36.40s) beat Tendai Zimuto (30 min 50.06s) in a tightly contested race.
Mqondisi Moyo claimed the junior men’s first prize of $150 in a time of 32 min 04.87s, with Respect Chinosiya finishing second in 32 min 54.71s, while Dumo Mkwananzi was third a minute later.
The junior women’s competition winner was Raviro Magomo in 37 min 36.53s. Dzidza Gumede was second in 37 min 41.97s, while Marjory Mugari was third in 38 min 22.77s. Elford Moyo won the men’s wheelchair race, with Molene Muza clinching the women’s event.
