IT is just a few days to go before the World Athletics Relays take off in Gaborone, Botswana and National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe director of coaching Phakamile Lisimati is upbeat the men’s 4x400m team will go beyond the heats.
The two-day competition is set for Saturday and Sunday.
Zimbabwe qualified for men’s 4x400m, and the team is already in Botswana polishing up their preparations.
The team is made up of Gerren Muwishi, Dennis Hove, Leeford Zuze and Thandazani Ndhlovu.
With some of the team members posting impressive times at the FNB Botswana Golden Grand Prix over the weekend, Lisimati believes they have set the foundation ahead of the World Relays.
“This is definitely telling us that at the relays, we are not afraid. We are going to stand up tall. We now believe we can beat these guys. We now believe we can run with these guys.
“And we are hoping that at the World Relays, our team will not only compete at the opening events.
“But will proceed up to our targeted goal of qualifying for the World Championships next year, which means our team has to proceed through all the levels, the first round, second round.
“And if everything moves according to plan, we are hoping that our team makes it into the finals of the 4x400m men’s relay.”
The quartet of Muwishi, Ndhlovu, Hove and Zuze are joined by Kelvin Bvekerwa as a reserve.
