A Chitungwiza man appeared in court on Wednesday charged with illegal possession of ammunition.

Rodwell Vanhukwavo Mutunya (35) was arrested in Chitungwiza last Thursday after police detectives received a tip-off that he had committed a case of armed robbery.

Prosecutor Ms Francisca Mukumbiri told the court that after the tip-off, detectives raided Mutunya’s house at around 3am.

She said when detectives knocked at his door to gain entry, Mutunya hid under a bed.

“After gaining entry, the detectives searched the house and found him under the bed. A body search was carried out, leading to the recovery of 12 by 9mm rounds of live ammunition from his left trousers pocket,” she said.

Ms Mukumbiri said the accused had wrapped the ammunition in a white plastic sachet usually used for storing tablets.

Mutunya pleaded not guilty to the offence and told magistrate Mr Elijah Makomo that the detectives were trying to fix him. “I do not admit to these allegations. The detectives found nothing at my house during the search, and only showed me the ammunition when they were recording a warned and cautioned statement from me,” he said.

Mr Makomo remanded him in custody to August 17.
