Live wire kills 6-year-old

A six-year-old boy died while he was being rushed to a hospital after he suffered electrical shock while pulling a live wire in Mkoba 3, Gweru.

A source who attended the incident said McNeil Tawanda was playing when he pulled a live wire that was dangling near an electricity pole last week on Friday.

Noticing him crying soon after the incident, her mother rushed him to Gilium private hospital, where he died upon arrival. A report was made to the police and Zesa officials.

The body of the infant was taken to Gweru General Hospital for post- mortem.

Midlands police spokesperson inspector Joel Goko confirmed the incident.

“We would like to urge parents to monitor their children. Community members should report any electrical cables which they suspect could pose danger in the community,” he said.

In another related incident a family in Mzilikazi suburb was plunged into grief after their son who had left to look for wild fruits was electrocuted.

The incident happened two weeks ago at around 5pm near the flyover in Nguboyenja suburb.

A neighbour who spoke to ` said the late Brighton did not notice a live wire which was hanging loosely from a Zesa pole. He stepped on it and tripped. The electrical wire shook him and he died a few metres from the pole.
