LIVERPOOL FC have announced the departure of head coach Arne Slot with immediate effect, bringing an end to a successful two-year spell that saw the Dutchman guide the club to a historic 20th English league title.
The Premier League giants confirmed on Friday that the process of appointing a successor was already under way.
Slot arrived at Anfield in June 2024 and enjoyed an impressive debut campaign, leading the Reds to the 2024-25 Premier League crown in his first season in charge. The achievement earned him the League Managers Association (LMA) Manager of the Year award.
Under his leadership, Liverpool also reached the Carabao Cup final and advanced to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League during his maiden season.
The 2025-26 campaign saw Liverpool secure Champions League qualification for a second successive year while reaching the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier club competition.
In a joint statement, Liverpool’s ownership paid tribute to Slot’s contribution, describing his tenure as significant, meaningful and successful.
“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful,” the statement read.
The club praised Slot’s work ethic, leadership qualities and willingness to shoulder responsibility, noting that these traits were evident from the moment he accepted the challenge of succeeding former manager Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool highlighted the Premier League triumph as a defining moment of Slot’s reign, describing it as a remarkable achievement given it came during his first season at the helm.
The club also acknowledged the role he played during one of the most difficult periods in recent club history following the death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, praising the compassion and humanity he displayed during that time.
Despite the success enjoyed under Slot, Liverpool’s hierarchy said they had reached the conclusion that a change was necessary for the club’s future progress.
“We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward,” the ownership said.
The conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction.
The club stressed that the decision was not a reflection of Slot’s abilities, but rather a belief that a different approach was needed to take the team forward.
Slot leaves Anfield having restored Liverpool to the summit of English football and etched his name into the club’s history books as the manager who delivered the Reds’ landmark 20th league championship.
Liverpool said Slot and his family would always be welcome at Anfield and wished him success in the next chapter of his coaching career.
