Livestock management skills empower farmers

FIFTY farmers from Mashonaland West recently acquired essential livestock management skills to safeguard their animals from tick bone diseases.

The training programme, conducted by Zadza Danga Feeds managing director Mr Peter Machakwa, focused on practical techniques such as hand spraying, pour-on treatments, plunge dipping, and hand dressing.

The livestock masterclass was aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring farmers are equipped to effectively manage cattle, goats and sheep.

Mr Machakwa said it was important to prevent livestock tick bone diseases, particularly in light of the January disease outbreak in Mashonaland West.

“By sharing our experiences and expertise, we hope to empower farmers to protect their livestock and ensure sustainable agricultural practices,” said Mr Machakwa.

The participants, who expressed gratitude for the valuable insights and hands-on demonstrations.

Mr Lovemore Fukusirai, a farmer from Banket said young farmers were benefitting a lot from the livestock masterclasses.

“When there was an outbreak of January disease, no one was sure about what was happening,” he said.

“People went into a panic mode and tried almost everything to protect their cattle while the Veterinary Department did its part. This livestock masterclass taught us a lot about January disease, how it can be cured and also to prevent it.”
