Lobengula: A regal suburb embracing excellence in every sphere

THE name Lobengula resonates with royalty and carries a legacy that transcends borders. As the last ruler of the Ndebele nation, King Lobengula’s name deserves to be immortalised not only in Bulawayo, but at a national level. The suburb of Lobengula, with its divisions of Old Lobengula, New Lobengula, Lobengula West, and Lobengula Extension, serves as a testament to the enduring influence of this revered figure.

In Lobengula, a diverse community thrives, comprising individuals who have carved their names in various fields such as music, football, media, corporate, and security. Among them is the affable and ever-smiling Assistant Commissioner Marshal Dube, an esteemed member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police, whose rise from a constable to the rank of Assistant Commissioner serves as an inspiration to all. Despite his love for football and occasional delusions of grandeur on the pitch, Dube’s true strength lies in his commitment to upholding principles within the police force.

No suburb in Bulawayo is complete without a representative from the world of journalism, and Lobengula is no exception. Respected Sunday News Assistant Editor Mkhululi “Mkays” Sibanda, an unapologetic Manchester United fan, hails from this regally named suburb. Another notable figure is Mehluli Sibanda, the former Chronicle Sports Editor, renowned for his unwavering support for the Red Devils, as well as his passion for cricket and Mamelodi Sundowns. Additionally, Godfrey Mutizwa, Editor-in-Chief of Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) Africa, continues to make Lobengula proud through his exceptional work in journalism.

Zanele Ndebele, a prominent city businesswoman and former teacher at Eveline High School, has made her mark in the catering industry. Her entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to her craft exemplify the values of Lobengula.

Music is an integral part of Lobengula’s vibrant tapestry, and it would be remiss not to mention the illustrious Jeys Marabini. Born Majahawodwa Ndlovu in 1971 in Filabusi, Jeys Marabini stands as one of Bulawayo’s greatest artistes. Lobengula, especially Lobengula West, holds a special place in his heart, as the community supported and promoted his music from its humble beginnings. Recalling fond memories of people gathering to watch his rehearsals, Jeys Marabini recognises the invaluable support that shaped his career.

“Some may refer to me as a city socialite, simply because I’ve frequented every joint in town and its suburbs. However, Lobengula is my home, and I owe a great deal of my success to this community,” shared Jeys Marabini, with a hint of nostalgia.

Enterprising entrepreneur Fact Mano, better known as Bro Facts, is another notable resident of Lobengula. His signature smile and persuasive charm are ever-present as he showcases his “original” clothing labels to potential clients.

However, one thing disappears when it’s time to collect payment — the smile.

In the world of sports, footballers are ubiquitous in Bulawayo, and Lobengula has nurtured its fair share of talented players and coaches. The Kutsanzira brothers, Rahman of Highlanders and Innocent, formerly of Bulawayo City, call Lobengula home. Siza Dube, a former striker for Railstars, Njube Sundowns, and Hwange, also hails from this suburb.

Lobengula boasts two remarkable siblings who have left indelible marks in the world of football. Ronald “Gidiza” Sibanda, a midfield maestro who represented Zimbabwe Saints, Dynamos, Amazulu, and the national team, stands as one of the country’s finest players. His brother, Bongani Mafu, chose the path of coaching and found success with Highlanders, the national team, Ngezi Platinum, and currently with Premier Soccer League returnees, Hwange. Lobengula has also produced icons like Voster Chitemu, the formidable hard man of Amazulu, Farai Mujokoro, who crossed the floor to join city rivals Bosso, and Lovemore “Magents” Ncube, the former Highlanders captain who caused a stir by joining Dynamos in the 1998/99 Premier Soccer League season.

Cleopas Dlodlo, the late former Highlanders defender, was another proud son of Lobengula. His skilful dribbling often made a mockery of opposing strikers, and Dazzy Kapenya, the 2002 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Soccer Star of the Year, remains the only Highlanders player to have won five league titles with the club. Fondly known as “Walker Texas Ranger,” Kapenya is considered one of Lobengula’s finest exports. Joel Luphahla, another Highlanders alumnus, has transitioned into coaching and is a strikers’ coach for Amahlolanyama, who will face Caps United at Barbourfields Stadium in their upcoming match.

Lobengula also boasts exceptional talent in women’s football. Precious ”Gringo” Mpala, a prolific striker who revolutionised the perception of women’s football in Zimbabwe, called Old Lobengula her home. Her extraordinary scoring prowess made her a standout player, and she remains an inspiration to aspiring female footballers. Though now based in South Africa, she fondly recalls her upbringing and the memories shared within Lobengula, including the vibrant MaMkhwananzi beer garden and the spirited matches between Dudu’s social team and their female counterparts.

In the realm of football, “law enforcers” come in the form of referees who ensure fair play and maintain order on the field. One such referee whose star was on the rise before Zimbabwe’s suspension from international competitions is Prince Mathumo, a proud son of Lobengula.

While the term “whatever” may carry dismissive connotations elsewhere, in Lobengula, it represents something entirely different — an esteemed sports bar aptly named Whatever. This establishment serves as a gathering place for sports enthusiasts, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.
